Solving the Pacquiao-Cotto mess

In the transaction advisory business or investment banking, there is no more truthful saying than "Principals make deals." That is, if you're the one with the money on the line, then it's your call - and only your call - to strike a deal (or decide to walk away) with the guy sitting in front of you who also has his money on the line. The lawyers, the accountants, the promoters, the trainers, the doctor, the business manager, the pet dog, the tricycle driver, the popsicle vendor, the nanny, none of them are the principals.

Early fight analysis: Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto

The fight that most boxing fans anticipated is official. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum announced on Monday that IBO and Ring Magazine junior welterweight champion, and current top pound for pound fighter, Filipino Manny Pacquiao will face off against WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico. The two will meet on November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas at an agreed 145 lb. maximum weight.

Pacquiao Cotto negotiations meant to deal with Mayweather demands

Manny Pacquiao's camp, outside of Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, has been pressing for a catchweight below 145 lb. in a fight against Puerto Rican welterweight champion Miguel Cotto. (Cotto weighed in at 146 lb. against his last fight against Ghana native Joshua Clottey.) Arum appears confident that the fight will push through in November. Cotto's promotional contract with Top Rank ends toward the end of the year, and Bob Arum - in order to keep his fighter - has to satisfy his Puerto Rican client with a highly attractive match.

Boxing's Clash of Civilizations

In 1996, political scientist Samuel P. Huntington published the now-famous book "The Clash of Civilizations." Huntington argues that after the end of the Cold War, regional and cultural divisions would lead to a clash of civilizations - conflict most visible in wars such as the break up of Yugoslavia, in Chechnya, and between India and Pakistan.

Well, this is boxing, a sport.

But boxing is also war.

Boxing fatalities and economics: determination or deathwish?

The vast majority of Americans either keyboard patter away inside office cubicles or work as hourly laborers. In an article on MSNBC, fewer than half of Americans are satisfied with their jobs. With young workers under the age of 25, less than 39 percent are satisfied with their jobs. And in a survey by CareerBuilder.com, more than four out of five U.S. workers do not have their dream jobs.

Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather, Marquez: a half year of fans' predictions

The 4th of July weekend marks a celebration of the birth of a revolutionary, freedom-inclined country in North America.

Memorable moments

The 4th of July weekend also represents the halfway point for 2009, a memorable period in the celebrity world that saw the passing (and deaths) of Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, and of course, the King of Pop Michael Jackson. The latter has provided an outpouring of sorrow and tributes - a shadowy valley after the peaks and highs of recent prize fighting performances by Juan Manuel Lopez, Manny Pacquiao, Vladimir Klitschko, and Miguel Cotto.
